Take 5 with ... Aigul from Zero Waste Life!
WELCOME TO WOMB'S WEEKLY "TAKE 5 WITH..." SERIES. ROUGHLY ONCE A WEEK WE WILL FEATURE A SHORT INTERVIEW WITH A HK-BASED CONSCIOUS PERSONALITY.
THIS WEEK WE PRESENT TO YOU: AIGUL SAFIULLINA FROM ZERO WASTE LIFE!
1. Tell us a bit about yourself, where are you from, where did you study, and what brought you to Hong Kong?
I am Russian, born and raised in the Ural mountains. After studying journalism I jumped on a plane to Buenos Aires, where I spent 6 craziest years of my life reporting on education, environment and entrepreneurs (3 Es!) who were changing the world. I moved to Hong Kong almost 2 years ago for a mix of professional and personal reasons with no regrets and no looking back.
2. What was your catalyst to start a Zero Waste Life, even though your days are pretty filled up with a full-time job?
Prior to moving to Hong Kong, I led a semi-nomadic life where I managed to keep all my belongings in one suitcase. It changed quite quickly in Hong Kong and caused a lot of personal frustration: I wanted to stop it as soon as possible. And then 3 things happened: I started trail running, discovered zero waste movement, met my business partner and the rest is a history.
3. What are your thoughts on pollution and waste in HK?
Sadly, these two words describe Hong Kong alongside its wealth, dynamic lifestyle, rich culture and diverse people. As someone who believes in the power of each individual, I am convinced that we can erase these two words from the common description of Hong Kong. Our daily decisions and actions have a lot of power.
4. What's your personal battle? How do you make your everyday life greener?
I took a decision to reduce my personal waste into a mason jar. It means rethinking my lifestyle, my habits and often refusing products and services that won’t fit into the jar. It’s a fun journey though and I am happy to see more people and businesses making this switch, step by step.
5. What's next for you and Zero Waste Life - remember, sky is the limit!?
Great question. We have a few announcements and amazing projects coming up. One of my personal goals is to empower more people to become green entrepreneurs. There are so many opportunities in any industry you look at: fashion, travel, food, retail, Internet of Things, even Fintech.
