Take 5 with... Bertha and Ching Ching from Earthero!
WELCOME TO WOMB'S WEEKLY "TAKE 5 WITH..." SERIES. ROUGHLY ONCE A WEEK WE WILL FEATURE A SHORT INTERVIEW WITH A HK-BASED CONSCIOUS PERSONALITY.
This week we present to you: Bertha and Ching Ching from EARTHERO!
Tell us a bit about yourselves, where are you from, where did you study, and what brought you (back) to Hong Kong?
We were born and raised here in Hong Kong. We studied abroad in the UK for some years but eventually returned to our home city to be with our families.
What was your catalyst to start a conscious blog, even though your days are pretty filled up with full-time jobs?
The reason behind starting our eco conscious blog was very simple - we wanted to produce less waste in our daily lives! On a more personal level, ‘Earthero’ is the constant driving force for us to live more consciously and change our habits for the better. There are too many things happening around the world and we wish to dedicate our efforts to raise awareness around environmental issues. It gives us huge satisfaction knowing that people actually read our posts and we’re influencing people bit by bit!
What are your thoughts on pollution and waste in HK?
Frankly, it’s quite disappointing at times, especially in the case of plastic waste. We see a lot of convenience behaviour that revolves around single-use plastics in the takeaway culture, which can be easily avoided. A lot of people failed to acknowledge the consequences behind each act of convenience. Seeing recyclable resources not being disposed and sorted properly is also frustrating. The recycling bins on the streets are often filled with non-recyclable garbage, not only jeopardising the efforts of people who take recycling seriously, but also causing recycling businesses to be inefficient. These are things that education can help!
We also notice a growing zero waste & conscious living community in HK! It’s important to spread the word and get more people involved!
What's your personal battle? How do you make your everyday life greener?
One of the challenge is not to get bummed out when people around you don’t take in your suggestions and continue with their habits of using disposables. Convincing people to go green can be hard, you need to give constant reminders while trying not to be too annoying or aggressive. We stock up reusable containers and cutleries at our offices so our colleagues can find them handy too! There’s no perfect way to zero waste, just what works! We love snacking, street foods and bubble tea but sometimes, when we forget to bring our own cups, straws, cutleries or containers, we have to consciously steer away from those shops as we want to avoid packaging waste.
It requires a lot of determination to resist the temptation of food & drinks so sometimes we give in...
What's next for you girls and Earthero - remember, sky is the limit!?
We are working on a series of interviews now, asking people to share some really simple ways of being eco-friendly from day to day. These are things that get overlooked easily but will help a lot. We are especially keen to talk to local elders about their views, as they were the ones who experienced life before plastic became prevalent!
